In December 1837 Piet Retief made his way down the Drakensberg with his party of 66 wagons. Take this self guided tour and meet Susanna Catharina Smit known as the Kaalvoetvrou and visit the Retiefklip monuements.
Susanna Catharina Smit’s famous words that she’d rather walk barefoot back across the Drakensberg before she would ever bow down to British rule again earned her this statue. Sadly, she passed away before ever making it out of Natal into the Berg.
On the farm Aberdeen, Deborah Retief you’ll find the Retiefklip monument where Deborah carved her father’s name on his birthday in 1837.
